Better Together!

If you were to visit the Hub, you’d find a sign, hanging above our lending library, which reads There’s More to Breaking Bread than Sharing a Meal. If you happen to visit on a Tuesday or Thursday between eleven and one, you’d most certainly see that in action.

Yesterday was one such day. Had you peeked your head in, you’d most likely have been offered a coffee, a seat, some lunch. At the very least, you’d have received a warm “hello!” and sent on your way with a smile.

We pack a lot into those two hours.

Friends helping friends, cooking, serving and sharing, making space around crowded tables, sharing a meal and so much more!

We got to celebrate friends who have started new jobs this week, friends trying new things (karate, even!) and cheered on those who are working hard to get to where they want to be.

Our friendly kitchen crew (two men and the best of the Ewoks) kept us full up on coffee and tea and then served a hearty hot lunch—special thanks to Gleaners for the potatoes and to Linda for roasting them for us and to Phil for delivering them!

We had friends working together to repot our big plant! Friends helping with the sidewalk project and taking recycling out. We got to give out some mugs (yes, Juliet went wild with the label maker again) and we got to listen to some great tunes! There was laughter, there was the soft hush of friends chatting, there were folks stopping by for a bag of rice or some free bread. Some of our friends brought in their own containers for takeaway.

We had visits from support workers, from agencies and one of them brought by some cool stuff for giveaways which gave some of you some new kitchen supplies! Even the postal carrier had a hello for us.

That togetherness isn’t limited to just Tuesday and Thursday lunches. You'll see Scott, our Partnership Co-ordinator in the Hub on Monday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and all day Friday. There’s always coffee on, a listening ear, a quick joke and always, a smile.

Last night, folks got together to catch up on a bit of WWE in advanced of next weekend’s rock’em sock’em something or another. We’ve been loving Sports nights, cheering on the Leafs (insert sad music) and planning our gardens.

The Hub is a lot more than a place to grab a fast coffee or pop in for a bowl of soup. It’s a place where friendship grows and respect multiplies.

And we think that’s pretty awesome.
